Another Side Of Haiti"

Immediately after its independence, Haiti has been marginalized, brutalized and forgotten by many. It struggles with dictatorships, civil wars, stagnant poverty, and unimaginable living conditions. Natural disasters after natural disasters have claimed the lives of many of its children. Haiti, once one of the most astonishing countries in the Caribbean; during its early age, was a true wonder, now it is the land that many regard with disdain. Haiti was populated by a native population which will later be known as the Arawaks. Haiti had control of the whole Island of Hispaniola; now that it shares with the Dominican Republic. When Christopher debarked in Haiti for the very first time; during his report to the court of Madrid, Christopher described the Island of Hispaniola as follow.

“ Hispaniola is a miracle. Mountains and hills, plains and pastures, are both fertile and beautiful... The harbors are unbelievably good, and there are many wide rivers of which the majority contains gold. There are many spices, and great mines of gold and other metals.” About the population, Christopher Columbus reported. “The Indians are so naïve and so free with their possessions that no one who has not witnessed them would believe it. When you ask for something they have, they never say no. To the contrary, they offer to share with anyone.”

Arawaks were taken advantage of for their kindness and love of sharing. They were mass murdered by the Spaniards. Their decimation and ultimate disappearance is considered to be one of the biggest genocide in human's History. An entire civilization had vanished from the face of the planet, in a very small time, and leaving behind very little about their culture. France came and settles a colony in the part that is now Haiti. Imported hundreds of thousands of slaves from Africa, and transformed Haiti into the richest colonies in the Caribbean, France’s most important oversea territory and a major world producer of various important types of demanded and well known staples items. Such as coffee, sugar, vetiver, corn, rice, etc…

Since its discovery on December 5th. 1492, Haiti’s majestic mountains, spectacular and breath taking sightseeing, has never ceased to amazed everyone who have witness them. When you stand on the tip of a cliff or hill, you cannot stop yourself from noticing that, it seemed like the mountains were in competition with each other. All, wanting to claim the title, of Haiti's most impressive. During French control of Haiti, many French came to settle there.

In early 17th century, Haiti had a French population, as big as Montreal’s at the time. Over 200,000. Haiti possesses the second largest coasts in the Caribbean after Cuba. And to this day many have remained, untouched, unexploited, and unknown to the rest of the country, whereas the rest of the world. Despite being the victims of violent natural disasters after disasters, Haiti has managed to keep proof of what a beautiful country it really was, of what an even more beautiful country it can be, with the help of its children, and those who really care about its proneness, its importance in History and last but not least, the many great opportunities left, for us to explore.
